Making of White Tiger Cub

I had a midnight craving to paint something adorable. So I tapped into my childhood memory of my first experience witnessing white tiger cubs.
Although this video is intended purely for enjoyment purposes, I do take a moment to discuss the topics of "adrenaline moments" and "art vs. drawing"

Enjoy!

White Tiger Cub

When I was about 7 years old, I remember falling in love with baby white tigers while working on a school presentation and looking through my National Geographic collection
29 years later I finally do something about it.

MALE FIGURE DRAWING - FROM REFERENCE

Language of the Body full documentary - hosted by Desmond Morris

One of the most informative and inspiring references for character animators, visual artists and anyone fascinated with the study of the human animal. This was a very important learning tool that I shared with my Acting for Animation students.

An all-out amazing documentary that will change the way you observe and understand communication, as well as open your minds to the differences and similarities between different cultures.

New 3 HOUR TUTORIAL - THE HUMAN HEAD - coming soon!

COMING SOON at the new Adamation Station STORE! (store.adamationstation.com)

This 3-hour technical studies tutorial is aimed towards intermediate to advanced artists.

The Human Head tutorial explores, dissects and explains the daunting and technical subject of the human head.

The common way that many artists tend to approach the study and execution of the human head and face is often to "simplify" the human form, to facilitate the understanding of what might seem, a very complicated and intimidating structure.

This tutorial however aims to demystify this beast and attack the subject head-on (excuse the pun), by offering artists the means to study, understand and furthermore, use their new found technical knowledge to cater to whatever artistic style they wish to explore, be it hyper-realism to all-out cartoon exaggeration.

Although this tutorial is aimed primarily at intermediate to advanced artists, the subject discussed in this tutorial is one which beginner artists need to adopt early on in their career to avoid making the common mistake of relying on "shortcuts" which in the long run, end up sending them down a spiralling path of misinformation and confusion. Like the expression goes "take the long short cut".

With that in mind, by the end of this tutorial, your knowledge and control over human facial anatomy, be it male or female, young or old, thin or thick, beautiful or homely, realistic or abstract, will be far more solid and less frightening. You will have the tools necessary to understand and manipulate the human facial form to create powerful, technically sound and most importantly, believable characters.

Subjects explored:

- And in-depth study of the generic adult human skull
- The uniqueness of the male vs. the female skull
- Studies of the human skull in toddlers and young children (2 and 6 years old)
- Useful tips for finding and remembering proportion and placement (frontal, profile and 3-quarter angles)
- Finding and exploring the understructure of a human face (male, female, young, old, thin and heavy)
- Understanding how bone structure influences a characters "look"
- A brief study of the muscles of the human face (which ones have the greatest influence on a characters appearance)
- A brief study of blood vessels and arteries, and how they transport blood to specific parts of the face
- Translating technical and anatomical theory into the world of under-painting to render believable skin

- "Breaking the rules" of human anatomy. How the understanding of human anatomy can translate into fictional "fantasy" characters
- Using traditional under-painting techniques to render human skin and eyes on a cartoon-style character

Amazing Medieval Armour Reference Videos

A few months back while researching medieval armour, I came across this small collection of little gems.

They are a series of short YouTube videos available from the WesternReservesPBS YouTube channel hosted by medieval armour specialists, where they explain in-depth how medieval clothing, armour, weapons and customs influenced the style and appearance of the fashion of the time.

Very valuable information for artists exploring adding more authenticity into their medieval concept art.

This is the first of a series of 5 or 6 videos covering such topics as "Medieval Knights", "Medieval Smiths and Weaponry", "the Vikings", "Blacksmith", "The Longbow" and this one below "Weapons and Armour"

Some of you who have watched "Old Mother Yew" might be familiar with the story behind this wonderful little hand-made sculpture.

When I told my mother the story of this little guy and how it inspired me, she dug through one of her museum-like shelves and dug him out for me.

So now my little shoe maker has found a new home sitting on my work desk next to me. He might only stand 4 inches tall, but he's become a very welcome new companion along my artistic adventures.
